Short Row Scarf & Spiral Hat

by Peggy

Short Row Scarf

Materials:
One skein of Sock yarn was used for the hat and scarf shown and #8 needles for a lacy effect. Gauge is unimportant, but mine worked out to be ~ 4 sts = 1”.

Notes:
•  A chained edge was employed throughout by purling the last stitch and slipping the first with yarn in back as if to knit .
•  For “K2tog” choose any decrease you find easiest to manipulate and continue to use it throughout. I usually P2tog on garter stitch fabric.
•  Short rows present a fine opportunity to learn to purl back backwards. Try peeking over the top of your fingers as you knit and mirror the movement going in the opposite direction. You may soon find it faster than making turns, especially for such short distances.

Set up Triangle Short Row Triangles

Row 1: Sl 1, K 1, YO, K2tog, turn.

Row 2 and all even rows: Sl1, K to last stitch, P1, turn.

Row 3: Sl 1, K 1, YO, K 1, K2tog, turn.

Row 5: Sl 1, K 1, YO, K 2, K2tog, turn.

Row 7: Sl 1, K 1, YO, K 3, K last stitch together with next stitch, joining the gap caused by previous short row. Turn.

Repeat rows 2 and 7 until you reach the YO on the far edge. The last short row incorporates the YO. Do not turn. K 1, P1 to finish row. This completes the first triangle.

Turn and begin another Short Row Triangle at row 1. Strive to Keep the lace edges (Sl 1, K 1, YO) uniform.

Ending Triangle

•  Count over to the middle stitch plus 1 (e.g.: 26 stitches) and place a marker.

•  Begin short rows as before until reaching the marker. Turn and knit back as usual.

•  Sl 1, K 1, YO, K3tog, K to “gap” stitches, K2tog. Turn and knit back.

•  Continue to K3tog on triangle edge and K2tog at short row gap edge until the K3tog meets the gap. There should be 6 sts left – 3 on each needle.

•  Slip the stitch from right needle back to left needle and pass second st (the YO) over sl st then move stitch back to right needle. (You have decreased 4 stitches at once.) K 1, P 1, turn. 5 stitches remain.

•  Sl 1, K 1, K 2 tog, Sl 1, turn. 4 stitches left.

•  Knit one row (or two if, when comparing to the beginning corner, you will produce a closer match.)

•  Bind off

Matching Sprial Hat

Provisionally Cast On 65 stitches

Row 1: Sl 1, K 1, YO, K to last 2 sts, P2tog, turn.

Row 2: Sl 1, K across

Repeat these two rows until the parallelogram reaches around head comfortably (usually 19” – 22”).

Weave beginning and ending rows together.

Gather the plain edge for a topknot. Lace edge is turned for the brim.
